In 2016, Carnival Cruise Lines sent four “detailed” documents to all passengers on their cruise ship, Triumph. The documents explained the benefits of the vaccines that passengers would be receiving. The documents were sent to passengers before the cruise, and were not accessible to those who did not receive them.
Carnival Cruise Line, the largest cruise line in the world, recently sent a letter to all of their guests in Canada. The letter informed them that all children under the age of two were required to have a full round of vaccines before boarding the ship.
Vaccines are a hot topic these days. Many parents are choosing to vaccinate their children against the flu, the measles, and other infectious diseases, but not all parents agree with this, since there are some who believe that vaccinating your child against these diseases will cause them harm. Some parents also believe that these vaccinations aren’t as effective as they claim to be, though this is largely untrue.. Many Canadians are looking forward to boarding a cruise ship for the first time in a long time. With a cruise prohibition in effect in Canada until November 1st, one alternative is to cruise from the United States or the Caribbean. However, there has been considerable misunderstanding about vaccination regulations and travel requirements for Canadians who got combination immunizations in the United States.
Carnival Cruise Line has now issued a letter to Canadian passengers clarifying the situation and laying out in full what they must do in order to have a pleasant cruise holiday.
Mixed Vaccines Are Not Accepted By The CDC
Not just Canada, but many more nations across the globe have begun administering combination vaccines; for example, someone who had an AstraZeneca injection plus a Pfizer or Moderna shot. The CDC has recently warned that this combination does not render someone completely immunized, according to Carnival Cruise Line.
Many Canadians would be disappointed since their National Advisory Committee on Immunization told them that combining vaccinations was not only permissible, but that mixing viral vector vaccines like AstraZeneca and mRNA vaccines like Moderna and Pfizer was also encouraged.
The majority of Carnival Cruise Line’s passengers must be completely immunized 14 days prior to boarding the ship. There is, however, room for certain visitors who have not been vaccinated, especially children.
These visitors should request for an exemption from the vaccination requirement in this instance. If guests are sailing from Seattle, they can do so through their travel advisor or by calling 1-800-CARNIVAL. If your cruise leaves from Texas or Florida, you may access it via a special URL provided to Canadian passengers. Carnival does caution that not all unvaccinated visitors will be admitted, since the ratio of vaccinated to unvaccinated attendees varies.

What Are the Risks of Sailing on a Carnival Cruise Line as a Unvaccinated Passenger?
There are a number of procedures and processes that must be followed when visitors are admitted as unvaccinated passengers aboard Carnival ships. On all cruises longer than four days, passengers must show a negative PCR COVID-19 test upon checking in, which should be done within 72 hours before sailing; they must also take an antigen test at embarkation and test again within 24 hours of debarkation. All of these tests will be charged to the guest’s account for a total of $150.
These passengers will also be barred from participating in any independent sightseeing at ports of call, notwithstanding Carnival’s sponsorship of bubble tours. Unvaccinated children and adolescents will be unable to participate in youth activities. Wearing a mask will be required.
Beginning August 1, visitors must also provide evidence of comprehensive travel and repatriation insurance. It’s unclear how long these restrictions will be in effect for unvaccinated visitors and Canadian visitors who received combination vaccines. Carnival’s president, on the other hand, is hopeful that things will change at some point:
Carnival Cruise Line President, Christine Duffy:
“We realize that unvaccinated visitors may suffer temporary limitations, as well as extra expenses for testing and insurance, during the first phase of our relaunch, and we are hopeful that these standards will develop over time.”

Furthermore, the Canadian government continues to urge Canadians to avoid cruise ship travel, as stated on the government’s travel advice website:
- Quarantine regulations may apply to you aboard ship or in a foreign nation.
- Local authorities may severely limit the breadth of consular services accessible to cruise ship passengers, particularly in quarantine circumstances.
- It seems doubtful that a government-organized repatriation flight to Canada would be available.
Canadians who opt to take a cruise and have a good experience will likely get minimal assistance from their government. Furthermore, positive visitors will be required to quarantine on-site and before departing to Canada at their own expense.
What Do the Other Cruise Lines Have to Say?
In terms of the criteria for travelers who got combination vaccinations, Carnival is not alone. Celebrity Trips and Norwegian Cruise Line have announced that they will follow the CDC’s advice for cruises departing from the United States.
Mixed vaccinations are permitted on cruises in other areas of the globe where combining vaccines is a common practice, such as the United Kingdom and the Mediterranean, and passengers are deemed fully immunized. A Canadian passenger on a Carnival cruise departing from Florida would be unvaccinated, while the same passenger on a Celebrity cruise departing from the Mediterranean would be completely vaccinated.
The Canadian government recently came under fire for forcing a mandatory vaccination on all new incoming cruise ships. When it came to the Carnival Triumph, the first cruise ship to be forced to adhere to the law, it was revealed that the ship had sent a letter to all Canadian passengers that included the vaccination details for all of its passengers. This included the vaccination details for any crew members, who are not required to be vaccinated when they are on a ship..
