Rick talked with us about his future tour itinerary, his views on going to Europe in 2024, and how reservations for his 2024 trips are looking.

(TP): With the return of “Monday Night Travel” this autumn, what can fans expect?

RS (Rick Steves): Every Monday, it’s a pleasure to welcome hundreds of traveling friends into my living room — and the fun will continue on Sept. 13 when tour guide Federico Garcia Barroso joins the festivities for a colorful virtual journey across Spain. On Sept. 20, my co-author and friend Gene Openshaw and I will take you back to 1978 for a journey along the “Hippie Trail” from Istanbul to Kathmandu. After more than 8 million people watched my Facebook series on the trip, I anticipate this MNT to be even bigger.

TP: Which locations will be included in this fall’s virtual show?

RS: Come along with me on a journey along 1978’s Hippie Trail, see Europe’s greatest subterranean marvels, explore graves and crypts, and blitz through Europe’s five smallest nations as I visit my favorite locations in Spain, the Netherlands, Turkey, Bulgaria, and England. Note: Full descriptions and registration for September’s concerts may be found at www.ricksteves.com/mnt.

TP: What might visitors to Europe anticipate in 2024?

RS: It’s more important than ever to be aware of entrance restrictions and to double-check details when you plan and travel. Bring patience, anticipate the unexpected, be flexible, and commit to following all COVID-19 rules in your area (masking, social distancing, and so on). More information on the Coronavirus may be found at www.ricksteves.com/tours/coronavirus-faq.

TP: What is your best piece of advice for first-time visitors to Europe?

Pack light, pack light, pack light! RS: Pack light, pack light, pack light! Consider this: Have you ever encountered someone who boasts, “Every year I pack heavier,” after five trips? We’ve taken tens of thousands of individuals of various ages and types on tours throughout Europe with only one carry-on luggage at my business. This is a radical idea for many, but they pull it off, and they’re happy they did. You’ll never go back after you’ve experienced that delicious movement and freedom.

TP: While Europe’s reopening is still fresh in your mind, how do you feel about the prospects for touring Europe this fall/winter and into 2024?

RS: We’re extremely cautious with our planning here at Rick Steves’ Europe, and we’ll only conduct tours if we’re sure we can do so safely, effectively, and in the experienced manner that’s so important to the Rick Steves style of traveling. Our 2024 trips are nearly all booked up, and I anticipate bringing 30,000 people to Europe next year.

TP: What advise would you offer to travel agents that are currently marketing European vacations?

RS: Be willing to be adaptable and generous with your clients. We received deposits from approximately 24,000 passengers in the early months of 2024, and we completely returned them all, no questions asked. That’s not just excellent business; it’s also good ethical. I’m in it for the long term, and I want tourists to know that we’re a reliable business.
