North Beach
North Beach is the first beach you see when you arrive on Taibi Island. Given its proximity to Savannah, it won’t surprise you that this is one of Savannah’s favorite places. If you have the opportunity to visit all the major beaches on the island, you will notice that the sand of North Beach is not as soft as that of South Beach. But it’s much quieter on the beach. It’s a great place to read a book, watch the birds or count the cargo ships that call at nearby Savannah Harbor. Central beach

You might even see a shark tooth or two looking for the perfect shell! To find Mead Beach, follow Interstate 80 south to Lovell Avenue. And although many consider this beach unwelcoming, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, including Deck Beach Bar & Kitchen.
South Beach
This area is considered the center of the town of Tybee Island. South Beach is full of entertainment: shops, restaurants, bars, Tybee Pier and many other interesting attractions. But of course, the beach is always the star of the show in my books. Of the three main beaches, South Beach has the softest sand and most moderate waves, making it generally the most popular beach on the island. There is a large parking lot nearby, and the lifeguards are almost always ready to respond. In this regard, it will not surprise you that it is a very popular holiday destination for families. It is the perfect place to relax, unwind and enjoy an eventful day in the heart of Tybee. Take a walk, buy a beach souvenir and enjoy the view!
Savannah River Beach
This quiet beach is just steps away from the more popular North Beach. You can even park in the North Beach parking lot to get there! From the parking lot, find the northern bridge and turn left to walk along the beach past the piers. This quiet river beach is not easy to find, but it is worth the drive. Especially if you are tired of the big beaches.
Reflux
Some people call Back River Beach the secret beach of Tybee Island… and rightfully so. This is the perfect place to visit if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the main beach. You’ll find this isolated stretch of sand at the end of Highway 80. The drive may take a while, but you’ll be glad you took the car when you see the amazing sandy beaches and gentle waves. You might even see a dolphin! There are many restaurants nearby (including The Crab Shack), making this part of the island a great place to spend a day away from the hustle and bustle of the main street.

There are some great restaurants on Tybee Island, whether you stay in North Beach, Mid Beach, South Beach or the Back River Beach area. Here are a few favorite places to visit on the island.
Beach Bar & Kitchen The Deck
End your day on the north side of the island with a cocktail and dinner at Deck Beach Bar and Kitchen. And if you want to dine overlooking the ocean? Then The Deck is the only restaurant on Tybee Island you should go to. Take a look at The Deck’s menu and you’ll discover a range of dishes inspired by the coastal cuisines of Australia, Mexico and Hawaii. You can choose small dishes like crispy calamari, shrimp tacos or shrimp ceviche (my favorite!) or larger dishes like shrimp po-boy or fresh market fish. Sit back, relax, sip your favorite tropical cocktail and enjoy the view!
Ice cream Sundae Coffee
Sundae Cafe is located in a shopping center near North Beach. But make no mistake. It’s a place where the locals go. And you know it must be good if the people of Tybee Island like it! The menu offers an eclectic mix of southern classics. Choose from dishes like Oysters Rockefeller, fried green tomatoes, crab cake sandwiches, fish tacos and even the delicious sweet and spicy tuna with pistachio crust. If you decide to visit the Sundae Cafe, make sure you make a reservation. Places are limited!
Crab Shack
As the name suggests, the Crab Shack has a rich and colorful history dating back to the early 1930s when it was a local fishing camp. You’ll find this gem a little further inland on Tybee Island, in the Back River neighborhood. You’ll find simple seafood like raw or steamed oysters, clams, crayfish and mussels, but these are the dishes you should look for. Seafood lovers can indulge in the Snow Country Boil plus the classic Low Country Boil and the Captain Crab’s tasting platter of shrimp, snow crab, river crab, mussels, scampi, corn, potatoes and sausage. And while there are plenty of seafood dishes, you’ll also find pub classics like nachos, ribs and fried chicken. You may have to stray a bit from the main beaches of Taibi Island, but this place is a must-see if you’re in the mood for some delicious seafood!
Taibi Island Historical Landmarks
Like neighboring Savannah, Georgia, Tybee Island is steeped in American history. Tybee is best known for its historical events dating back to the Civil War. Between Fort Pulaski and the Tybee Lighthouse, there are many interesting historical sites to visit if you are tired of the beach.
Fort Pulaski
Fort Pulaski is located between Savannah and Taibi Island on Coxpur Island. Although the fort is best known for the siege of Fort Pulaski during the Civil War, this national monument was erected shortly after the War of 1812. At the time, President James Madison ordered the construction of new coastal fortifications to ward off potential foreign invaders. After 18 years of construction, the fort was finally completed in 1847. Today, visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities in the National Monument – hiking, biking, fishing, and even bird watching – all at Fort Pulaski! You can even bring your four-legged friend along to enjoy a day in the great outdoors. If you like to hike, Fort Pulaski’s nature trails are a must while in town. There are several trails to choose from, but the Lighthouse Overlook Trail and the Historic Dike System Trail stand out. You will see the Savannah River, Tybee Island and a fantastic view of Cockspur Island Lighthouse. Fort Pulaski National Monument is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. There is a small entrance fee, but it is for the whole week. Fantastic if you want to go hiking!
Tybee Lighthouse
During your visit, why not visit Georgia’s oldest (and tallest!) lighthouse? The current lighthouse was built in 1916, but the origins of the Taibi Island lighthouse go back more than 285 years! The lighthouse was originally built in 1732, commissioned by General James Oglethorpe. During the War of 1812, the lighthouse was even used as a signal tower to warn of possible British attacks. Today, the lighthouse stands 145 feet tall. Visitors can climb the 178 steps for a bird’s eye view of the lantern keepers’ cottages and the many surrounding coastal landscapes. The Taibi lighthouse is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. The last tickets will be sold at 4:30pm each day. Admission also includes a visit to Tybee Cottage and the Tybee Museum in Battery Garland. Remember that the lighthouse is closed on Tuesdays and public holidays. Plan your visit accordingly.

And the coastal pavilion offers picnic tables, shade and snacks if you need a break from the beach.
Taibi Centre for Marine Sciences
If you have a soft spot for sea turtles (and marine life in general), you’ll love the Marine Science Center. Whether you attend a turtle talk, a tour of the Sift ‘n’ Seine wetlands or a guided walk on South Beach, this is the perfect place to learn more about your favorite marine animals and how we can help preserve their natural habitat and Georgia’s coastal resources. The Taibi Island Marine Science Center is open daily from 10am to 5pm. You’ll find it next to the pier at Tybee Island.
Lesser Taibi Island
If you’re looking for an outdoor refuge, Little Tybee Island is the place for you. Contrary to what the name suggests, this neighbouring island is actually twice the size of the main island. This beautiful, completely uninhabited barrier island is suitable for pets and is perfect for camping, fishing or picnicking under the stars. A visit to Little Tybee Island is also a good excuse to get out on the water. You can only reach the island by boat! You can go kayaking, jet skiing or rent boat equipment at a nearby shop. But if I were you, I would recommend visiting this place by kayak as it is the best way to see the salt flats. If you decide to visit Little Tybee Island, be aware of the upcoming tide change. As you would expect on a coastal island, they change dramatically every six hours.
Sunset cruises and dolphin cruises
Tybee is a great place to relax on the water. Whether you enjoy deep-sea fishing, viewing the underwater world or watching the sunset, you’ll find an informative tour or a relaxing boat ride.
